The Business of Interior Design

Although great design, creativity, and attention to detail is a must for an Interior Designer, one must also be a business professional in the design world.

About the Assignments: 

Business Plan:

  • For this assignment, we took the position of a designer about to start their own business.

  • After selecting a business formation, we were to co consider the following:

    • Business Summary​

    • Market Research

    • Marketing Plan

    • Operation Plan

    • Financial Information

  • The purpose of this was to develop our Business Plan completely, and to know what would be needed to start our own Interior Design Business.

Letter of Agreement:

  • For this assignment, we were required to construct a Letter of Agreement . This is a preferred option for designers to use rather than a more formal contract.

  • The Agreement was based on the following scenerio:

    • Clients: Victor and Maria Chang​

    • Wanting to hire for the remodeling of their kitchen and adjuvant family room

    • They have a contractor to manage the construction phase.

  • The purpose of this was to develop our Letter of Agreement, acting as a sole proprietor of  my own firm.

Design Firm Research:

  • For this assignment, we were required to look at three Interior Design or Interior Architecture Firms to research

  • Firms were to be of varying sizes, varying areas of specialization, and in different geographical locations

  • The purpose of this was to develop our opinions on which type of firm we would most enjoy working for.

Business Formation:

  • For this assignment, we were required to act as a designer starting their own business. 

  • ​We were to research and consider the following:

    • Name of the Formation​ 

    • Business Name

    • Pros of the selected formation

    • Cons of the selected formation

    • Reflection summary

  • The purpose of this assignment was to consider the pros and cons of each formation and decide which formation would best suit our needs.

Business Legal Filings:

  • For this assignment, we were required to act as if we were setting up our business, based on the Business Formation Project. 

  • We were to determine the following, based on the business formation:

    • Filings and Licenses needed​

    • Name of the forms to be completed

    • Location to file the paperwork

    • Cost of the filing or license

  • The purpose of this was to find out exactly what paperwork is legally needed in order to start the business formation determined.

Professional Association Research:

  • For this assignment, we were required to look at the following Professional Interior Design Associations:

    • ASID​

    • IIDA

    • NEWH

    • NKBA

  • We were to include general and specific information about each Association.

  • The purpose of this was to develop our knowledge on these organizations, from how to become a member to the mission and purpose of each organization.
